SANDWICH HARBOUR

Sandwich Harbor Tours and Excursions:

Sandwich Harbour is located in Namib Naukluft Park, which is located in Namibia. Although many people are familiar with the park, relatively few have actually been there. The beautiful landscapes and one-of-a-kind off-roading opportunities that result from the fact that enormous sand dunes flow directly into the ocean are created here. Our cars will transport you to breathtaking viewpoints, where you can get a real sense of the seclusion that Namibia and the Skeleton Coast are so well known for. We provide both full and half-day excursions to Sandwich Harbour, in addition to combo tours that include both boating and kayaking experiences.

Taking place in and around Sandwich Harbor

You can snap pictures, stroll along the beach, observe birds, and learn about the history of the region if you stop and do any of those things. After that, depending on the tides, you may be able to wander along the shore, slide down roaring dunes, or see the Totnar villages’ many points of interest.

This complex of salt pans, which spans 3,500 hectares and is located to the southwest of the lagoon, is today responsible for the production of more than 90 percent of South Africa’s salt. Through the process of evaporation, the salt from the saltwater is concentrated in these pans, just as it is in the one in Swakopmund. In addition, they provide a fertile environment for the development of shrimp and fish larvae. It is one of the three wetlands that surround Walvis Bay (the other two being the lagoon and Bird Island), all of which combine to create the single most significant coastal wetland in Southern Africa for migrating birds.

The high dunes of the Namibian “Sand Sea” have moved right onto the beach about 10 kilometers to the north of the Sandwich Harbour lagoon, which is home to a large number of birds. As a result, it is now impossible to drive on the beach unless the tide is extremely low; however, even then, it is still a perilous 10 kilometers, during which a vehicle can easily become bogged down.

In the event that your vehicle becomes stuck and you are unable to seek assistance, the waves that are crashing against the dunes will carry away your vehicle. When you and your group are in the Sandwich Harbour lagoon, you cannot remain there for an excessive amount of time, and you must constantly pay attention to the rising tide in order to avoid being cut off by the ocean.

The ideal time to pay a visit

It is thus extremely necessary if you want to see Sandwich Harbour and the lagoon, to organize your visit to the shore when it is low tide during the middle of the day and to engage a local guide to take you there while you are vacationing there. This should be done when you are organizing your trip. Because it is located inside Namib Naukluft Park, you will also need to get permission to enter the area from the regional office of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in order to do so.
