Bordering the Luangwa River, the northern and southern Luangwa National Parks contain some of the most breath-taking and untouched wilderness in Africa. As a result of this and the parks’ successful anti-poaching campaigns, the area has developed into a world-renowned wildlife haven. The South Luangwa National Park is renowned for its walking safari, which allows visitors to view elephant, hippo and even lion close-up under the supervision of professional and knowledgeable armed guides.

Accommodation: Kafunta River Lodge
Guest will be picked up at Mfuwe airport by a driver from Mfuwe Lodge and drive for 25 minutes through the local village, over the Luangwa Bridge, and into the park. You will see wildlife as soon as you near the bridge so be sure to keep your binoculars handy! Accommodation: Kafunta River Lodge
This Morning Guest will have breakfast and go on a Game drive and will be back before lunch and in the afternoon go on a walk. Wildlife includes hippo, crocodiles,s and over 400 species of birds, elephants and large herds of buffalo. Thornicroft’s giraffe and Cookson’s wildebeest can be spotted plus healthy populations of wild dogs.
Guest will have breakfast and go on a morning game drive and be back around lunch and again go on an afternoon game drive.
Overnight: Kafunta River Lodge
Kafunta River Lodge is owned and operated by Anke & Ron Cowan who have made the Luangwa Valley their home for the past 20 years.
The 10-room lodge is located on the floodplains of the Luangwa River, away from the busier area near the park’s Mfuwe gate. During the peak season the lodge accesses the national park via its own pontoon.
Central to the lodge is a spacious bar and dining area. Built around a semi-evergreen wild mango tree and thatched in the traditional style, it offers superb panoramic views over the Luangwa River and the South Luangwa National Park. Great game viewing and bird watching from the lodge is guaranteed.
Adjacent to the bar is a refreshing infinity pool and the only natural hot spring tub in the Luangwa Valley. This unique hot tub is fed from a source on Kafunta’s grounds, offering a constant temperature of 38 degrees. Here you can enjoy pure relaxation while being presented with magnificent views over the flood plains and the Luangwa River.
Activities on offer include game drives (morning, afternoon and night), bush walks, village & cultural tours as well as a wellness spa.
Accommodation: Three Rivers Camp
Guest will have breakfast and drive through the park to Three River Camp, set at the confluence of the Luangwa, Kapamba and Lusangazi Rivers. The stylish tents lay under shady sausage trees and face either the Luangwa River or the game-rich lagoon. Each tent has its own wooden deck with comfy chairs to enjoy the surrounding vistas, en-suite bathrooms include indoor and outdoor showers, double sinks and flushing toilets. Here you will be able to go on game drives and walks and you have two nights here.
The guest will have a nice breakfast and go on a morning walk and in the afternoon on a game drive.
Overnight: Three Rivers Camp
Kafunta Safaris has added a new bush camp to their collection – Three Rivers Camp. As the name suggests, Three Rivers Camp is located at the confluence of the Luangwa, Luzangazi, and Kapamba Rivers. The new location is about 2 hours south of Kafunta River Lodge, about 7 km upriver from Island Bush Camp. The area features open lagoons and is teeming with wildlife including big herds of elephants and buffalo, giraffes, antelope, wild dogs,s and much more.
Three Rivers and Island Bush Camps are the only safari operations in the area so you can be assured of a real private safari in a pristine area of the Luangwa Valley. The camp includes five sophisticated tents, each with its own raised sleeping platform, with the option of a night under the African sky.
This seasonal camp will offer both game drives and bush walks. It will also be possible to walk from Three Rivers to Island, or vice versa. A combination with Kafunta River Lodge is however always recommended to maximize game viewing.
This is the last day of the tour and the guest will just have breakfast and be transferred back to Mfuwe airport at a time to be confirmed. You could arrange to visit Tribal Textiles and other shops on the way to the airport, to pick up a few locally made gifts and memorabilia.
