FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

1.Why is the Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert important to Namibia?

This photogenic area is famous for its large, red sand dunes, which are some of the tallest sand dunes in the world and is one of Namibia’s most visited attractions.

2.How tall are the dunes in Sossusvlei?

Many of them are higher than 200 metres, the highest being the one nicknamed Big Daddy, about 325 metres high.

3.What is the highest dune in the Sossusvlei area?

Big Daddy is the tallest dune in the Sossusvlei area.

4.Which African desert is home to the sand dunes of Sossusvlei?

Namib-Naukluft National Park, while most of the park is hardly accessible, several well-known visitor attractions are found in the desert. The prominent attraction is the Sossusvlei area, where high orange sand dunes surround vivid white salt pans, creating a fascinating landscape.

5.Are the roads in good condition when traveling to Swakopmund?

Generally, they are in excellent condition. Most of the roads and towns are well signposted. Major roads are tarred; the rest are gravel.4

6.How would you describe Swakopmund?

“Timeless” is the word most often used to describe Swakopmund, a historic German colonial era town that is a favourite holiday destination for both locals and visitors.

7.Why visit Swakopmund Namibia?

Swakopmund is a perfect base for exploring the coast, from taking boat and kayaking trips from Walvis Bay to spot the abundant marine life of the Atlantic Ocean to going birdwatching at Sandwich Harbour further south.

8.Will I need to bring a mattress or sleeping bag?

No, because we the company provide you with a mattress, pillow and sleeping bag if needed.

9.Should I expect changes to the issued itinerary?

Yes, there are factors beyond our control mostly with accommodations either they are fully booked and we now need to look for a substituted which means that the itinerary may change, and each tour operator reserves the right to do this. Generally, these changes are minor, and we will do our best to advice clients.

10.Is the area Malaria-free?

Areas north of Windhoek pose a small risk of malaria, which increases during the wet season. However, the risk increases the further east you travel, i.e., the Zambezi region or Botswana or Zambia. The best way to prevent malaria is not to get bitten by wearing long sleeves/pants, putting on repellent and ensuring that your tent is zipped up to prevent mossies from getting into the tent. Please seek a specialist health centre’s advice or visit your doctor prior to your trip to give you up to date advice on prophylactics, but please be aware that this still does not give you 100% protection. Your doctor will also provide you with advice on other health requirements.

11.What should I pack for the trip

Sun protective clothing with an effective sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat especially comfortable loose fitting items. Wherever you go take water at all times, cold days always turn into hot days

12.Do I need a 4x4 to drive to Sossusvlei?

A 4×4 will get you to the foot of the Sossusvlei dunes to allow for more time to appreciate the area. The Kuiseb Canyon and the so-called ‘Moon Landscape” are reached by a long and winding gravel road which is accessible in a two wheel drive car but for ease and peace of mind a 4×4 is recommended.

13.Is it safe to Camp?

Sleeping on-top a car gives you an added sense of security in the wilderness. Generally speaking, camping is safe, even on the non-fenced campsites. Most animals do not perceive tents as tents with people inside, but interpret them as large animals or objects, hence an attack is very unlikely. But because of the weather conditions we don’t really encourage our clients to camp at Swakopmund or Walvis Bay.

14.Is the toilets nearby?

Toilets are near the campsite

15.How old is the Swakopmund jetty?

It was built between 1904 and 1905
