Haus Sonneneck, Windhoek (45km)

After you arrive at the Hosea Kutako International Airport approx. 45 km east of Windhoek, you will be welcomed by the car rental company and taken to Windhoek where you will take over your vehicle with all the necessary instructions and information.
Afterward, you will drive to your accommodation where you can freshen up and rest. In the afternoon you will be picked up by your guide from Bwana Tucke-Tucke for an interesting Windhoek city tour, during which you will get to know historical buildings and the township of Katutura. In the evening you can go out for a relaxing dinner.
We can recommend Joe’s Beerhouse, Cape Town Fish Market or The Stellenbosch.
Situated in Central Namibia, the cosmopolitan city of Windhoek serves as the capital of the country. It is home to an international airport and a plethora of restaurants, shops, entertainment venues, and accommodation options.
The city is clean, safe, and well-organized, with a colonial legacy that is reflected in its many German eateries and shops, and the widespread use of the German language.
Windhoek has an interesting mix of historical architecture and modern buildings, many of which are worth a look, including the Alte Feste an old fort, the 1896 Christuskirche Christ Church, and the more contemporary Supreme Court.
Situated in the Eros Hills, it enjoys proximity to Restaurants, a Shopping Centre, and the City, while retaining the quiet of a country estate.
The spotless rooms are spacious and include every possible comfort for your personal freedom and relaxation.
All rooms have en-suite facilities with a cozy and comfortable atmosphere, making your stay the most enjoyable.
The heart of Sonneneck is the area around the sparkling swimming pool, surrounded by large, shady trees and a lush garden, where you can absorb the warmth of the Namibian sun.
Whether you are visiting our capital for business or pleasure, Haus Sonneneck is the perfect stop-over before your excursion into our beautiful country.

Namib Naukluft Lodge, Solitaire (130km)

The journey continues along the scenic C14 through the Namib Desert. In the little one-horse-town Solitaire you can get fuel and basic stuff from the little shop.
Solitaire’s apple crumble is quite popular and people liking apple crumble claim “rightly so”. Strengthened and satisfied you’ll continue on the good gravel road until you reach Naukluft Rest Camp.
The contrast between the never-ending expanse of the desert and the ruggedness of the Naukluft Mountains couldn’t be bigger.
After a lunch break there is enough time to hike the “Olive Trail”, which takes about 4 hours. The level of difficulty is rated medium to difficult.
One should definitely be free from giddiness and physically fit. Breath-taking views, impressive landscapes and a very special surprise guarantee an unforgettable experience. Please note: If you don’t feel like climbing along a chain over a relatively steep cliff, you can also take a walk to a natural swimming pool up in the mountains (approx. 1,5 hours there and back).
Here you have several superb swimming possibilities in crystal clear mountain spring water – unique in Namibia!
The Namib Desert – unique, with a variety of desert landscapes, gives Namibia its essential character. The Namib Naukluft Park is the largest Nature Reserve in Namibia and many private nature reserves are nestled at its borders to form a unity for wildlife and people alike.
Namib Naukluft Lodge & Soft Adventure Camp is located on a unique 25,000-ha Private Nature Reserve which stretches from the Namib Desert to the Naukluft Mountains, bordering to the Namib Naukluft Park on both sides, East and West.
This unique and peaceful place has been carefully developed by its nature loving owners Friedolf and Barbara Sturm and offers a great desert experience for the relaxed holidaymaker and the enthusiastic desert explorer.

19 Day self-drive safari into southern Namibia with a focus on hiking

DAY
6

Sossus Dune Lodge, Sesriem (100km)

In the morning you bid farewell to the Naukluft and take a relaxing one-and-a-half-hour drive to the Sossusvlei. It is advisable to pay the entrance fee for the next day’s excursion into the Namib Naukluft Park upon arrival and to enjoy the sundowner from the first dune to the right of the road – the Elim Dune. Here you have beautiful vistas of the sea of dunes to the west and the mighty Naukluft Mountains to the east.
As there is no accommodation at Sossusvlei, visitors to this desert wilderness are likely to end up staying at Sesriem, 65 kilometers away, where camps and lodges serve as a base from which to explore the dunes. Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot.
Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of the canyon.
Namibia Wildlife Resorts launched the first lodge in the Namib-Naukluft Park, the Sossus Dune Lodge, in June 2007. Built in an environmentally sensitive manner, primarily from wood, canvas, and thatch, in an attractive ‘afro-village’ style, Sossus Dune Lodge offers guests an evocative and life-changing experience.
Situated within the park, guests benefit from being able to reach Sossusvlei before sunrise, and stay until after sunset, and on their return after an exhilarating day, relax in the tranquillity and splendor of the Namib Desert, under the spectacular African sky.
Sossus Dune Lodge offers professional guided tours, fully unleashing the beauty and biological diversity of the desert environment to visitors, and offers the best beds in the desert.

19 Day self-drive safari into southern Namibia with a focus on hiking

DAY
7

Sossus Dune Lodge, Sesriem (130km)

Today an early rise (approx. 1 hour before sunrise) is advisable. Guests of the Sesriem Camsite, Dead Valley Lodge, and Sossus Dune Lodge can drive to the Sossus and Dead Vlei earlier than guests staying outside the park.
The spectacle of colors of this natural wonder is best seen during sunrise with the additional advantage of cooler temperatures than later in the day. You drive 80 km through dune landscapes on a good tar road. The last 4 kilometres take you through thick sands where you will have to engage your 4×4.
The Dead Vlei with its numerous dead camelthorn trees as well as the famous Sossusvlei offer an unbelievable impressive natural setting. Take your time to just let your soul stray whilst climbing the Big Daddy, the tallest dune in the surrounding.
Depending on your state of fitness and sand conditions the climb will take about 1 – 2 hours. The way down is usually much quicker and the more adventures can run down the steep slip face into Dead Vlei – this takes less than a minute.
Before the heat starts burning your soles away you should start to make your way back. At the park entrance, we recommend a visit to the Sesriem Canyon before returning to your accommodation to spend the afternoon in the cool swimming pool.

DAY
8

Tok Tokkie Trails, NamibRand Nature Reserve (130km)

After breakfast you continue south out of the state owned Namib Naukluft Park and into the private NamibRand Nature Reserve. More breathtaking landscapes and numerous wildlife species await you.
At the Tok-Tokkie farm house a light lunch is served and you will be introduced to your desert guide, who will accompany you the next two days. A short introduction to the trail is given after lunch before starting your hike in the early afternoon.
The Tok Tokkie Trail is easy to walk, as you only have to carry a day pack – all other luggage is transported by car to the overnight camp – and the speed of walking is adjusted according to the group. The maximum number of participants is eight, so that the groups are always small and that the guide is able to individually respond to the guest’s preferences.
In the evening you’ll enjoy the obligatory sundowner and a little later a three-course menu. You’ll sleep on cosy field beds amidst the dunes underneath a million stars – a very special experience!
Spanning an area of 172,200 hectares and encompassing four distinct ecosystems, the NamibRand Reserve of southern Namibia is among the largest privately owned game parks in Southern Africa.
Founded to conserve the unique environment and wildlife species of the Namib Desert, the park’s mix of dunes, mountains, rocky outcrops, sandy flats, and gravel plains provides habitats for a diversity of mammals, including hyenas, jackals, foxes, antelopes, and various wild cats.
A plethora of bird species, reptiles, insects, and frogs also have their home here, alongside an array of plant species. Discover the mysterious ‘fairy circles’, and unexplained bare patches in the sand, or enjoy a night of sublime stargazing – having been named Africa’s first International Dark Sky Reserve, it is one of the least light-polluted areas in the world.

DAY
9

Tok Tokkie Trails, NamibRand Nature Reserve

Even before sunrise you are woken up with coffee or tea in bed. Now you have time to enjoy the sunrise in this pristine landscape. After breakfast we start with the reading the morning “newspaper”, which means that your guide will explain the fresh tracks in the sand left by the desert inhabitants to you as you go along
These inhabitants of the Namib, the oldest desert in the world, have adapted to the arid climate in an astonishing way. Your experienced guide will tell you a lot about the mammals, birds, reptiles and insects found here and will probably be able to lure one or the other desert inhabitant in front of your camera.
The hot midday hours are spent at the shady lunch spot. Here you have time to relax, to have a bite for lunch and to reminisce about the last days. Once the temperatures cool down a bit towards the afternoon you embark on the last leg of the second day. The route takes you pass fairy circles and over small hillocks with unbelievable views onto the gras-covered, orange-red dunes of the Namib.
At the dune camp you can free yourself from the desert sands under a rustic bucket shower. Again you will enjoy a delicious three-course, candlelight dinner. Your guide will take you on a short astronomy journey of the southern night sky once the sun has set and the sky is clear (i.e. nearly always).
Once more you’ll sleep in warm field beds right amidst the dunes!

10

Klein-Aus Vista Eagle’s Nest Chalets Gondwana Collection Namibia, Aus (280km)

Once more you awake with the rising sun surrounded by a sea of dunes. The hike today is easy going and you will arrive around 10:00 at the Tok-Tokkie farmhouse. Time to say goodbye to your guide and the friendly Tok-Tokkie staff.
You still have a fairly long way ahead, always continuing south along one of the country’s most beautiful scenic roads – the D707. Here the route becomes the destination, so take your time and enjoy the unspoiled nature. In the late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Klein Aus Vista, a beautiful accommodation set in a scenery of rugged mountains at the northern border of the Nama-Karoo.
Perched above the plains of the Namib Desert in the rocky Aus Mountains, the small village of Aus lies at the heart of phenomenal botanic diversity. Aus serves as an excellent base from which to see the area’s major attraction: the feral horses of the Namib Desert, which run wild and free in the sparsely vegetated plains.
The best place for viewings is at the water trough at Garub, which lies just twenty kilometers away from Aus. Visitors can gain insight into the Succulent Karoo by visiting beautiful Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park, home to the most biodiverse desert in the world. Don’t miss the opportunity to camp under the famously clear Namibian night sky and experience the desert landscape on horseback.
Forever landscapes, solitude, silence, and sunsets. Klein Aus Vista’s Eagle Nest is a self-catering getaway with eight individually built rock chalets. Keep to yourself or drive to Desert Horse Inn’s restaurant for delicious fare and congenial company. Return to dream of peace and wake to magnificent sunrise scenery.

11

Klein-Aus Vista Eagle’s Nest Chalets Gondwana Collection Namibia, Aus (0/260km)

Today you can choose between two alternatives:
Day visit to the harbor town Lüderitz (there and back 260 km tarred road) with a visit to the ghost town Kolmanskop or
Hiking in the Succulent Karoo around Klein-Aus Vista
Option 1: The 1883-founded town Lüderitz in the Restricted Diamond Area offers a rustic Atlantic charm and has a very interesting story to tell about the diamond rush of Namibia at the beginning of the 20th century.
A visit to the diamond ghost town Kolmanskop (last guided tour starts at 11 am) is just as recommendable as a stroll to the harbor and the „Felsenkirche“ (Church on the rocks) as well as an excursion to the always windy Diaz Point, where the Portuguese sailor Bartholomeus Dias erected a stone cross in the year 1487.
In the late afternoon, you return back to Klein-Aus Vista. On the way, you can visit the feral horses of the Namib at Garub.
Option 2: Klein-Aus Vista offers six marked hiking trails between 4 and 20 km long and with different levels of difficulty. Here you can explore the fauna and flora of the private “Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park” on your own.
The easy, medium, and difficult hikes in the Succulent Karoo of Namibia’s south are well worth it and set in contrast to the previous hikes in the Namib Desert. After the hike, we recommend a visit to the feral horses of Garub close by.

Fish River Lodge, Fish River Canyon (230km)

You leave Klein-Aus Vista in the early morning and drive along the B4 in an easterly direction. In the small village of Goageb, you turn onto the D463, a good gravel road leading through beautiful landscapes. You should reach the Fish River Lodge situated directly at the fringe of the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon worldwide, no later than 2 pm.
Between April and September guided hikes into the Fish River Canyon are offered.
After arrival and a welcoming drink, you will receive a short briefing. Canvas bags are distributed to all hikers. All items needed for the hike are packed into the bags. These will be transported to the camp by car. An open vehicle will take you on a leisurely drive to the starting point of the hiking trail.
After a 2 km walk, you will reach the first overnight camp, where you have enough time to settle in your tent and make use of the camp facilities. Enjoy a beautiful and relaxing sundowner, followed by a 3-course menu under the stars.
Carving out an epic rocky wonderland in the south of Namibia, the Fish River has created Africa’s largest and the world’s second-largest canyon. Hot, dry, and stony, the Fish River Canyon measures a whopping 160 kilometers in length, at times 27 kilometers in width and 550 meters in depth. The awe-inspiring natural beauty of this ancient geological marvel draws visitors from around the globe.
For those looking for adventure, the intense 85-kilometer Fish River Hiking Trail through1.5 billion years of geological history will thrill avid adventure enthusiasts, and for visitors looking to relax, head over to the canyon’s southern end to enjoy a soak in the mineral waters of the renowned hot springs of Ai-Ais, or take in the spectacularly scenic views from Hobas Restcamp as well as numerous other viewpoints along its rim.
Other popular activities include scenic chartered flights, horse riding, nature drives, and seasonal kayaking.

The 45,000-hectare Canyon Nature Park is a natural sanctuary for Karoo succulent flora and endemic wildlife.
Incredible hiking trails meander down into the heart of the canyon affording guests spectacular scenery combined with 75 km river frontage made up of permanent water holes and rock pools that attract Hartmans Zebra, Kudu, Oryx, Springbok, and many other smaller wildlife species and endemic bird life.

Once you’ve reached the Orange River you drive through the /Ai /Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park in an easterly direction.
The road meanders along the river until you reach your accommodation close to a big vineyard in the late afternoon.
Rising from the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains in Lesotho, forming part of the international border between South Africa and Namibia, the Orange River is the longest river in South Africa. The Orange River Basin extends into Namibia and northern Botswana.
The river snakes its way through one of Southern Africa’s harshest environments bringing life to an area of sheer rugged beauty. Aside from vineyards in the desert the river also creates a mobile playground from which to explore the area.

Schützenhaus Guesthouse, Keetmanshoop (300km)

In the morning your journey takes you up north. A short detour to the main view point of the Fish River Canyon is well worth it and for lunch we recommend a stop-over at the superb Canyon Roadhouse. Afterwards you continue to Keetmanshoop, your stop-over en route to the Kalahari.
Set on the Trans-Namib Railway in the ǁKaras region of southern Namibia, the town of Keetmanshoop is known as the capital of southern Namibia. Founded in 1860, the quaint oasis is a living slice of history.
German colonial architecture is dotted around the town and the local museum, housed in an old church, provides interesting insight into the town’s heritage. Just a short drive out of town, the Quiver Tree Forest is a sea of spikes and twisted trunks, while the neighbouring ‘Giant’s Playground’ is an evocative expanse of strange rock formations. A highly professional and reliable tour operator

Our Namibian tour was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. Henzel was both our guide and driver, and he did an outstanding job in both roles. He was incredibly thorough and well-prepared, always sharing detailed insights about the landscapes, wildlife, and local culture. You could tell he truly knew and loved the country.

“Must have” tour for a Namibia smooth visit!

We did the “7 Days Wildlife Etosha and Sossusvlei Namibian Safari (Accommodated)” with Safari World Tours in December 2023 and it was the best choice for our family! We are experienced travelers (49 countries visited) and found that to travel to Namibia with a small child (4 years old) a tour would the the best option
