Yes, the Fish River Canyon in Namibia is worth visiting if you enjoy open landscapes, photography and quiet places. You can see its winding riverbed and layered cliffs from viewpoints without joining a long hike. Allow half a day for the rim, or several days for the canyon trail.
Viewpoint visits and hiking need different plans. The main trail operates seasonally, and high water can interrupt access. In 2026, NWR announced its reopening on 17 July, following water assessments. For early planning, its published hiking fee is N$540 per person for November 2026–June 2027.
What is the Fish River Canyon and what does a visit cost in 2027?
The Fish River Canyon lies in southern Namibia, within the /Ai-/Ais–Richtersveld Trans frontier Park. Its broad bends, steep walls and exposed rock layers make it a destination for scenery rather than a typical wildlife safari.
NWR describes it as Africa’s Largest Canyon. It is often compared with the Grand Canyon, although worldwide rankings depend on whether length, depth or width is being measured.
Is the Fish River Canyon worth visiting?
Yes, especially on a southern Namibia road trip. Allow half a day for viewpoints or four to five days for the main hike. The canyon stretches about 160 km, reaches up to 27 km wide and drops roughly 550 metres at its deepest point.
| Quick fact | Planning details |
| Canyon size | Approximately 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and 550 metres deep |
| Main viewing area | Hell’s Bend, reached through Hobas |
| Viewpoint visit | Allow around half a day |
| Hiking distance | Approximately 85–90 km |
| Typical hiking duration | Four to five days |
| Normal hiking season | 1 May–15 September, subject to operating notices |
| Published hiking fee | N$540 per person for November 2026–June 2027 |
| Park admission | Published schedule: N$150 per non-SADC foreign adult, plus N$50 per vehicle for a vehicle with up to 10 seats |
The parking charge is separate from hiking, accommodation and transport. Under that published schedule, two non-SADC adults in a qualifying vehicle would pay N$350 for One Day’s Parking Entry. Recheck tariffs for your 2027 travel dates.
Is The Fish River Canyon Worth Visiting?
It is worth including when you want to explore southern Namibia at a comfortable pace. An overnight stay nearby gives you time to enjoy the views without squeezing them between two long drives.
You do not need a busy activity schedule here. The appeal is watching light move across the cliffs, finding different angles for photographs and taking in the scale of the landscape.
- Worth it if: You enjoy photography, quiet landscapes and a route through the Kalahari, Lüderitz or Sossusvlei.
- Consider leaving it for another trip if: You have less than a week and mainly want wildlife in northern Namibia. The extra driving could take time away from your main interests.

Which viewpoints should you visit?
Start at the main viewpoint overlooking Hell’s Bend. The river’s broad curve makes this one of the easiest places to understand the canyon’s size.
Hiker’s Point offers another perspective near the start of the long-distance trail. Viewing the canyon from the rim does not give permission to descend into it.
| Viewing option | Suggested timSe | Practical advice |
| Main viewpoint at Hell’s Bend | 30–60 minutes | Take time to look beyond the closest bend |
| Hiker’s Point | Another 30–45 minutes | Stay in permitted viewing areas |
| Other open rim lookouts | Allow extra time | Follow local signs and staff advice |
Hobas visitor information describes gate access as Sunrise to Sunset. Visitors staying outside the park need time to drive back from the viewpoints before closing. Check the day’s gate arrangements at reception, especially when planning photography around sunset. Carry water, wear sun protection and keep away from exposed edges.
How does the Fish River Canyon hiking trail work in 2027?
The Fish River Canyon hike is a demanding multi-day walk. NWR describes approximately 85 km taking four to five days, while its Hobas page lists 90 km. Use 85–90 km for initial planning.
| Planning point | What to know |
| Normal season | 1 May–15 September |
| Group size | Minimum 3, maximum 30 |
| Minimum age | Children under 12 are not permitted |
| Medical requirement | A recent medical certificate of fitness |
| Reservations | Booking through NWR |
| Route | Starts near Hobas and finishes at Ai-Ais |
| 2027 access | Depends on NWR’s season notices and river assessments |
The normal calendar is a planning guide, not a promise that the trail will operate every day.
Recent announcements show why this matters. NWR’s 2025 season update confirmed a 1 May opening after an earlier postponement notice. Its 2026 Reopening Announcement followed high-water closures and set the reopening for 17 July.
Never enter a closed trail or attempt unsafe river crossings. Follow current ranger instructions and prepare for slippery rocks, rough ground and remote conditions.
When is the best time to visit the Fish River Canyon?
May to September is the best time to visit Fish River Canyon for cooler conditions and outdoor sightseeing. These months also overlap with the normal hiking season.
Pack a warm layer for early mornings. You will still need drinking water, a hat and sunscreen during the day.
| Months | General visiting conditions | Hiking access |
| January–April | Hot weather; plan short outdoor stops carefully | Outside the normal main-trail season |
| May–June | Cooler conditions for viewpoints | Subject to opening notices and river levels |
| July–August | Cooler days and cold mornings | Usually within the operating season |
| September | Conditions become warmer | Standard season ends mid-month |
| October–December | Increasing heat | Outside the normal main-trail season |
A cooler month does not automatically mean safe river crossings. Hiking access remains dependent on conditions.
How do you get to the Fish River Canyon?
Most visitors arrive by road. Choose your accommodation before planning the drive, because Hobas, Ai-Ais and lodges on the western rim have different access routes.
| Starting point | Approximate distance to the Hobas area | Planning advice |
| Windhoek | 650 km | Allow a full travel day |
| Sossusvlei | 559 km | Start early and include rest stops |
| Lüderitz | Around 400 km | Allow time for the approach roads |
| Keetmanshoop | Around 145–160 km | Distance varies with the chosen route |
NWR publishes the Windhoek and Sossusvlei figures. The other distances are route estimates rather than door-to-door measurements.

We plan southern Namibia journeys around the actual overnight stops, with time for fuel, breaks and gravel-road travel. Avoid using distance alone to decide how much sightseeing you can fit into a transfer day.
Refuel before remote sections and leave enough daylight for unexpected delays.
Where should you stay near the Fish River Canyon?
Hobas is a practical base for the main viewpoints. Ai-Ais suits visitors interested in the hot springs or the end of the hiking trail. Private lodges offer other settings and levels of comfort.
| Stay | Best suited to | Published rate or location |
| Hobas campsite | Travellers with camping equipment | N$480 per person, November 2026–June 2027 |
| Hobas bush chalet | Visitors wanting a room | N$1,890 per person sharing, bed and breakfast, November 2026–June 2027 |
| Ai-Ais Hot Springs and Spa | Hot springs and the hiking finish | At the southern end of the canyon |
| Canyon Lodge | Lodge accommodation near the eastern approach | Set among granite boulders |
| Canyon Village | A base for exploring the Hobas side | Within the Gondwana Canyon area |
| Fish River Lodge | A stay overlooking the canyon | On the western rim, with a separate approach route |
For comparison, Hobas lists N$2,340 per person sharing for its bush chalet during July–October 2026. This is a dated seasonal reference, not a July–October 2027 quotation.

Fish River Lodge is not an interchangeable base for Hobas. Its western-rim location changes your driving route, so choose the setting that fits your wider trip.
How does the canyon fit into a southern Namibia route?
The canyon combines naturally with the Kalahari, Lüderitz, Kolmanskop and Sossusvlei. Our 21 Days Namibia All-Rounder Safari Tour includes these southern highlights.
For a shorter holiday, this sample eight-day southern Namibia route provides a starting point:
- Day 1: Windhoek to the Kalahari.
- Day 2: Travel to the Fish River Canyon area.
- Day 3: Visit the canyon viewpoints.
- Day 4: Continue to Lüderitz.
- Day 5: Explore Lüderitz and Kolmanskop.
- Day 6: Drive to the Sossusvlei area.
- Day 7: Visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.
- Day 8: Return to Windhoek.
This is a suggested route for tailoring, rather than a fixed package. It includes substantial driving days and a viewpoint visit, not the multi-day canyon hike.
We can adjust the stops, accommodation and pace around your dates. Adding the full hiking trail requires several extra days and separate arrangements.
