After breakfast, journey to the small, coastal town of Luderitz, situated on the Atlantic Coast. Our road will lead through the spectacular landscapes and breathtaking vistas of the Namib Desert.

Before reaching Luderitz short visit to Ferer Desert Horses.

In the afternoon relax and optional walk around the town with historical building.

Luderitz

Sandwiched between the rugged and stark Atlantic Coast and the arid desert of Namibia, the town of Luderitz is located in an incredible unique geographical setting.

This seaside town is something of an anomaly frozen in time – a piece of 19th-century Bavaria bordering the pinkish dunes of the Namib Desert.

Lutheran churches, German bakeries, and colonial buildings boasting German art nouveau architecture are dotted about the settlement, while its windswept beaches are home to flamingos, ostriches, seals, and penguins.

The nearby ghost town of Kolmanskop, which has been taken over by the desert dunes, is another fascinating must-see attraction, located approximately 10 kilometers from Luderitz central, along with the herd of wild desert-adapted horses near the small town of Aus.

Is Lüderitz worth a visit?

Luderitz isn’t one of the must-see places that pop up on a Namibian Road trip route, probably because it involves a detour inland from Aus. What caused the Fish River Canyon?

The beginnings of the canyon started about 500 million years ago when a fracture of the earth’s crust resulted in the collapse of the valley bottom forming a broad valley running north–south. Southward-moving glaciers deepened it, with more faults and erosion adding to the effect.

What rocks are in the Fish River Canyon?

During this period the glacial deposits and their cover of Karoo sediments were nearly completely eroded; the rocks exposed today in and around the Fish River Canyon belong to the Namaqua Metamorphic Complex (~1300 m. y.), overlain by flat-lying ~550 m. y. old sandstones and black limestones of the basal Nama Group.

How long is the Fish River Canyon walk?

The Kalahari has existed as an inland desert since the Cretaceous period (65-135 million years ago). It was during a period of greater rainfall that the Makgadikgadi Depression in northern Botswana was formed.

What is mined in the Kalahari Desert?
