Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru was established in 1961 covering 188 sq. km area. The park is on the Rift Valley floor enveloped by bushy and wooded grasslands. It is an accessible park that is around 3 km from Nakuru town and Nairobi City 170 km. it is the prime park featuring numerous attractions.

See African Rhinos both species

It is rare to see both species of black and white rhino that are endangered. This park allows seeing species easily. It is a rhino sanctuary.

Abundant and Diverse birdlife

There are diverse and abundant bird species found on the shores, lakes, and other habitats.  There is a breeding site for greater and lesser flamingos. This park has over 450 bird species. The birds found are Lesser flamingo, Greater White Pelican, Egyptian geese, Cormorants, Greater Flamingo, Saddle-billed stork, Little and Cattle Egrets, Kingfishers, Fish Eagle, Blue- eared glossy starling, superb starling, white-necked bee-eater, Olive thrush, and lots more.

Makalia Waterfalls

This is a beautiful waterfall in the Park southern end. It is an amazing place. The water sound falling and the surroundings are amazing.  This waterfall attracts several visitors originated in the Central Ridge from Mau Forest.  The cliff/rocky area waterfalls for some bird species such as red-winged starling, African pied wagtail, and others. It is a favorable place for hiking and picnics.

Viewpoints

The park offers scenic landscapes and views to be seen from ViewPoints well designated. This one includes the baboon viewpoint. Get a commanding view of the surrounding landscapes and the lake.

Rothschild’s Giraffe

This giraffe specie is rare and seen in this National Park acacia woodlands and the lakeshore.

Things to do

  • Explore the downtown area. A five-course supper at a restaurant. Read paper while sipping hot coffee. Walk along the main thoroughfare and wander past.
  • Explore the new region on foot. Find a souvenir and shop at the smaller shops. Reinvent artistic aesthetic. Sample at a shop for hand-made jam or let the modern life hustle sweep in the modern metropolis.
  • Stay in Bedouin-style tents enveloping giant volcanic rock.
  • Get immersed in the unblemished Milky way and enjoy a spectacular night sky.
  • Saddle up a camel and explore the scrubland.
  • Be charmed by the bereaved lioness protecting a gazelle.

How to access

Nairobi airport is the closest international airport for visitors coming to visit Lake Nakuru.  Nairobi is the closet airport. It takes 3 to 4 hours’ drive through A-104 highway.

By road book a tour and take the highway Nairobi-Nakuru. They offer fantastic views.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit is from June to October and January to February to visit Lake Nakuru.  The park is open throughout the year. The wet season in many parks does not entertain game viewing, but the same is not with Lake Nakuru.

The roads are good, park fenced and so viewing is also best from July to December, the dry season.

The operating hours range from 0600 hrs. to 1900 hrs.
