It is an amazing part of the Namib-Naukluft National park and is also Namibia’s most loved attraction. The source of it’s name is from the fact that it is at the 45th kilometre of the road that lies between Sesriem gate and Sossusvlei. It’s close to 80 metres high and is harder to hike up than you can imagine due to the softness of the sand. Adventure Activities
2. Big Daddy Dune:
Big Daddy is a dune that can be found at the edge of Deadvlei. It is the highest dune in Sossusvlei although not in the whole of the Namib Sand Sea. But years ago, the water disappeared and the trees died- but dry air prevented decomposition and they later got frozen in time. The midnight black trees speckled across cracked white clay to form an incredible vista. It’s easy to stay long there just walking through the ghostly trees, searching for new angles.
